Annie Wasdell
Annie Wasdell is a London-based contemporary artist whose sculpture and works on paper draw upon an interest in scientific investigation. She is particularly known for her vibrant kiln-cast glass pieces, which take found objects as their starting point, transforming them into, in the artist’s words, ‘a collection of talismans for the twenty-first century.’
Eggs, toothpaste tubes, figs and more recently, snails and sea urchins have provided subject matter for the artist, allowing her to explore connections between different objects which may be seemingly unrelated. The process of casting is seen as a journey of sorts, with each work moving through a series of iterations. She says; ‘the form remains the same, but slippages occur, caused by the associations one makes through the new material and colour references.’ The resulting gem-like and translucent sculptures present as precious specimens from another universe, simultaneously fragile and incredibly durable.
Annie is an alumni from Goldsmiths College, London, and has an MA in Fine Art from City and Guilds, London, where she was awarded the Astor Materials Award. She is currently the Artist Fellow within the Glass and Casting department at City and Guilds. Recent London exhibitions include; ‘falling softly softly falling’ - Finch Gallery, The London Group Open’, Copeland Gallery, ‘Hyper-normalisation’, Safehouse Peckham, ’This, That and the Other, ASC Handbag Factory and ‘So where do we go from here?’, Bell House, Dulwich. She won the Jackson’s Art Prize at the International Original Print Exhibition at Bankside Gallery, London, in 2021. She is also a recently elected member of ‘The London Group’. She lives and works in south east London.
