Julia Peintner
Julia Peintner is an emerging artist who specialises in contemporary printmaking and drawings on paper. Working from photos of people close to her, she creates tender images of figures pictured alone - or with companions - weaving together observation and autobiographical elements, exploring the complexities of interpersonal relationships, belonging, and womanhood.
Her own analogue photographs are important source material for Julia, and their nostalgic, ethereal quality seeps into her imagery. Although a familiarity with her subjects lends intimacy, asking them to pose in specific ways allows the artist to create compositions which appear slightly ambiguous in terms of perspective, scale and positioning. The use of dark areas to create silhouetting introduces drama, referencing the emotive woodcuts of Edvard Munch and Mamma Anderson. In contrast, tactile materials such as Japanese paper and conte lend the work a softness, echoed by the use of a restrained, earthy palette.
Born in South Tyrol, Italy, Julia lives and works in London. After graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2015, she spent time in Japan at the Studio Kura artist residency near Fukuoka City, and upon returning to London, worked for Blackbird Editions. She received a postgraduate degree from the Royal Drawing School in 2022 and since then has widely exhibited in group exhibitions in the UK, Europe, the US and Japan. She has recently founded Pressure Editions in south east London, working with internationally renowned artists to support them in their printmaking practices.
We are proud to present new work by Julia in our upcoming group exhibition And Other Animals. Contact us to request a catalogue preview.
