Sang-Mi Rha
Sang-Mi Rha is a London-based British-American artist of Korean heritage. Her expressive, vibrant paintings – which blend abstraction with the familiar - draw upon her memories of a multicultural upbringing, and are also inspired by Flemish still lifes and works by Old Masters.
Sang-Mi’s paintings manifest a metaverse called ‘Neither Nor’, a concept based upon her experiences of growing up across four continents. Intuitive and layered, her paintings bring to life her alter ego ‘Allen-the-Voyager’, who is pictured journeying with companions through landscapes populated by birds, rendered in heightened colour. She describes these fantastical compositions as exploring ‘a realm of the pure unknown that breathes as an allegory for life’.
Sang-Mi received a BA in Painting from Chelsea College of Arts (2005) and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art (2016). She has since exhibited widely, including her first institutional show—a two-person presentation at the Arts Institute, Plymouth (2023), a solo presentation at Gallery CNK, South Korea (2021) and a residency at Unit 1 Gallery, London (2024). Her work is included in public and private collections worldwide. Sang-Mi lives and works in London
