Sophie Herxheimer
Sophie Herxheimer is a London-based artist and poet whose practice spans drawing, writing, collage, printmaking and performance. Using primarily analogue processes, she creates thought-provoking, gently witty work which explores memory, heritage and culture through storytelling.
Works on paper play a key role within Sophie’s practice, and text - whether hand-written, or found and then re-appropriated- flows through much of her imagery. Personal history and explorations within nature have provided rich subject matter for the artist and many of her projects have involved public interactions and collaborative making. We are delighted that Sophie has written and new poem and produced two new limited edition screen prints inspired by Sydenham Wood, and its inhabitants, for our upcoming group exhibition And Other Animals.
Sophie’s work has been shown at Tate Modern, London, The Museum of Liverpool and on a giant mural along the seafront at Margate. Recent commissions include a set of 16 new images for the ‘Voices of the Holocaust’ collection at the The British Library and over 90 hand-cut vignettes for Marina Warner's new memoir. She has illustrated six collections of mythology and fairy tale, most recently The Mighty Goddess (The History Press, 2023.) with Sally Pomme Clayton. Her poetry collection Velkom to Inklandt (Short Books, 2017) was a Sunday Times Book of the Year. She is currently working on a graphic novel to be published by Pushkin Press in 2026.
We are proud to present work by Sophie in our upcoming group exhibition And Other Animals.
