Jake Garfield
Jake Garfield is a London-based artist working across printmaking, drawing and painting. His work – which is characterised by a graphic quality and selective palette of olive greens and terracotta reds - draws upon art-historical and pop-cultural references to reflect on the nature of artifice and selfhood.
The act of making is a key thread which runs through Jake’s imagery. Whether paying homage to past masters such as Albrecht Durer - or unidentifiable boxers pictured on screen - his male protagonists are often portrayed as artists. Heavily patterned wallpaper backdrops, and pictures within pictures, are recurring motifs which contribute a sense of the theatrical. Combining multiple techniques within a single work creates a collaged quality, allowing the artist to further communicate his making processes to the viewer.
Jake trained at the Royal Drawing School followed by the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2016. He has undertaken several artistic residencies in countries including Italy and the USA. His work has been exhibited in the British Museum, London, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Christie’s (London & New York), Somerset House, London, and the Royal Academy of Arts, London. His work has been acquired by significant institutions in the UK including The British Museum, The Royal Collection, Pallant House Gallery and The V&A Museum. A solo exhibition was held at 8 Holland Street, London, in 2025. Jake lives and works in north London.
We are looking forward to presenting new work by Jake in Man and Woman in Garden, a joint exhibition with Bobbye Fermie in March 2026. Request a catalogue.
