Alice Macdonald, Beth and Jo Get the Logs In, 2021 (framed)

£320.00
Sold

Watercolour and acrylic on paper, 15 x 20cm

Alice Macdonald is an emerging, London-based artist whose diaristic paintings are informed by a broad range of sources spanning historical literature, classic films, myths, fairytales, and friends and family painted from life.

Alice’s jewel-like works on paper form a core part of her practice, their smaller scale lending them an intense, voyeuristic quality. This framed work is one of a series where the artist has painted whilst watching classic and more recent films on television. Each of them re-interprets a leading actress and her role; in this case, the source is the 1994 historical drama ‘Little Women’. In Alice’s words; ‘I am drawn to the feminine stereotypes portrayed in old films, especially the romantic cliches – like the pathetic, crying or fainting woman being saved by a handsome man. I find there is something absurd and funny about them, and also irresistible.’
