Alice Macdonald is an emerging, London-based artist whose diaristic paintings are informed by a broad range of sources spanning historical literature, myths, fairytales, memories, and friends and family painted from life. Fascinated by the complexities of human behaviour, emotion and relationships, she is attracted to the cinematic and the melodramatic, whether drawing scenes from classic films, or painting in the landscape.
This painting on canvas is a part of a body of unique works which evolved since Alice’s artistic residency at Clover Mill in the Netherlands, where worked from life on paper and explored collaging techniques. Alice has three brothers and often uses them as subjects in her works. This paintings depicts one of them, the blue palette evoking the chilliness of the weather. Windows are a recurring theme in the artist’s work; she says ‘I love how windows give you a chance to have an image within an image’.
