Woodcut, 31 x 38cm, edition of 30

Amsterdam-born artist Bobbye Fermie is renowned for her dreamlike works on paper that explore introspective female figures inhabiting imaginary spaces. Inspired by memories and photographs, her work is characterised by a limited palette which creates impact and lends each image a graphic quality.

In early 2023 Bobbye began to explore printmaking using two very different techniques; woodcut and monotype. The result is her first cohesive series of prints titled 'Tales of the Home', which Oliver Projects has been proud to launch exclusively online. In these prints, Bobbye has continued to investigate the lives of her solitary female figures going about their business in domestic scenarios. However, a male and female pairing has also been introduced, symbolising a progression from the isolation evoked in previous works. Bobbye describes this couple simply as 'representing a union’.

This framed limited edition woodcut has been hand-printed on delicate Japanese paper by the artist in her north London studio. It is one of a pair of bold prints created in a limited palette, featuring a silhouetted couple pictured at home at sunrise and sunset. The woodcut technique requires advance planning and results in impactful images. In Bobbye’s words, the figures ‘are based on my own characteristics and experiences but are not a direct translation or self-portrait’. It has been framed behind art glass in whitewashed maple.

Bobbye studied in the Netherlands and Belgium before moving to London in 2014 to attend the Royal Drawing School. She has undertaken artistic residencies in the UK and Italy and her work has been featured in several publications. She has exhibited widely in the UK and her work is currently held at several collections, including the Morritz-Heyman Collection, The Royal Collection and Soho House. She lives and works in north London.
