Robbie Fife’s paintings and prints are carefully constructed, featuring an intriguing array of subjects including toy-like towers that become rockets, mysterious figures, and sharks. A course in Indian miniature painting, and the architecture of the Spanish landscape have profoundly influenced Robbie’s practice resulting in gently surreal works that are rich in surface pattern and narrative.
In 2021, Robbie began experimenting with the monotype process, resulting in a new body of unique prints on paper. Some of the characters in these recent works have been inspired by the artist’s parents and have a spiritual, ritualistic quality. ‘This print sets me thinking about when my mum and I walked around a henge near our home on All Hallows’ Eve/ Samhain, years ago. The field the henge is located in could have doubled as a reasonable football pitch. The stick that the figure is carrying gives her something of the earth and her heading towards the goal posts is perhaps as literal as it looks.’
