Bobbye Fermie, Ready for Today, 2023 (framed)
Water-based monotype, 36.5 x 28cm
Amsterdam-born artist Bobbye Fermie is renowned for her dreamlike works on paper that explore introspective female figures inhabiting imaginary spaces. Inspired by memories and photographs, her work is characterised by a limited palette which creates impact and lends each image a graphic quality.
In early 2023 Bobbye began to explore printmaking using two very different techniques; woodcut and monotype. The result is her first cohesive series of prints titled 'Tales of the Home', which Oliver Projects has been proud to launch exclusively online. In these prints, Bobbye has continued to investigate the lives of her solitary female figures going about their business in domestic scenarios.
This framed unique water-based monotype has been hand-printed at Artichoke Print Workshop, in Brixton. It is one of nine new unique works with a free-flowing, spontaneous quality produced in a palette of reds, pinks and blues. In the artist’s words; ‘most often I choose my colours intuitively, and sometimes the reason only becomes apparent after the piece is finished. When I look at the red of the hands and faces of these figures, I notice their importance, trying to take up space in contrast to their surroundings.’ It has been framed in whitewashed maple behind anti-reflective glass.
Bobbye studied in the Netherlands and Belgium before moving to London in 2014 to attend the Royal Drawing School. She has undertaken artistic residencies in the UK and Italy and her work has been featured in several publications. She has exhibited widely in the UK and her work is currently held at several collections, including the Morritz-Heyman Collection, The Royal Collection and Soho House. She lives and works in north London.
